Ancient Water and Glacial Geography
Big Stone County's geological
story reaches back to the
retreat of ancient glacial waters.
Glacial Lake Agassiz and
the Glacial River Warren
system helped form the region's
valleys and waterways.
Indigenous History
The Big Stone Lake region is
part of the ancestral and
cultural geography of Dakota
peoples. Its waterways and
prairie environment supported
travel, fishing, hunting
and community life long before
European-American settlement.
A County Established in 1862
Big Stone County was established
by the Minnesota Legislature
in 1862. Early efforts to
organize the county government
encountered legal challenges.
The county was officially
declared organized in 1881.
Ortonville and the County Seat
Ortonville developed into
Big Stone County's governmental
and commercial center during
the nineteenth century.
Its history reflects frontier
settlement, regional commerce,
agriculture and the development
of community institutions.
The Historic Courthouse
The present Big Stone County
Courthouse was completed in 1902.
Architect Fremont D. Orff
designed the building,
which incorporates
Ortonville granite.

Farming, Rail Transportation and Community Growth
Agriculture became an important
economic foundation for the county.
Farms, grain shipments, rural roads,
merchants and government institutions
supported the development
of lasting communities.
Big Stone County Today
Modern Big Stone County combines
agriculture, healthcare,
lake recreation, tourism
and public services.
The county's remoteness
also makes transportation
planning important,
particularly during
Minnesota's winter months.
