Long Prairie:
The County Seat,
Historic Agency
and Courthouse.
Long Prairie has one
of Todd County's
deepest documented histories.
Long before
modern county government,
the Long Prairie River
was used by Dakota,
Ojibwe and other
Indigenous communities
for travel and trade.
Beginning during the
1840s, Long Prairie
was the location of
a federal agency
associated with the
Ho-Chunk, historically
called Winnebago.
The agency period
was connected to
federal relocation policies
that displaced Indigenous
communities.
Later settlement,
river navigation,
wagon travel and
county government
helped Long Prairie
develop as a
regional center.
John P. Tweed
transferred a block
of land to
Todd County in 1871
for public buildings.
The historic
Todd County Courthouse
was completed in 1883.
Additional government
buildings were
constructed over time.
The town is also
associated with
Hotel Reichert,
the historic
Bank of Long Prairie
and the Christie Home.
Today, county offices,
medical appointments,
businesses, lodging,
historic sites and
the surrounding rural
region generate
transportation needs.
