The Mississippi River and Bluff Country

Eleven Cities. Seventeen Townships. Centuries of River History.

Wabasha County was one of Minnesota Territory's original nine counties created in 1849.

The county takes its name from Dakota leaders known as Wabasha or Wapasha. Dakota communities lived and traveled through this river region long before the territorial county was established.

The Mississippi River, Lake Pepin, the Zumbro River, fertile valleys and limestone bluffs shaped settlement, trade and travel.

Wabasha is the county seat, while Lake City is the county's largest city.

Historic riverboat commerce, lumber, railroads, pearl-button manufacturing, tourism and farming all contributed to the county's development.

Today, visitors come for the National Eagle Center, Lake Pepin, historic downtowns, fishing, scenic drives, parks and local community events.
