Rice County Historical Heritage

Dakota homeland, early trade, historic schools and the bank robbery that made national history.

Long before Faribault and Northfield became incorporated communities, the region's rivers, forests and prairies were part of Dakota homeland, including the history of the Wahpekute Dakota.

The Cannon and Straight rivers helped shape early travel, trade and settlement. Alexander Faribault established an important trading presence in the region, and the community that bears his name developed into a center of education and industry.

Rice County was created in 1853. Its history includes wheat milling, wool manufacturing, railroads, institutions serving deaf and blind students, educational development, and communities connected through agriculture.

Northfield became especially well known for the establishment of Carleton College and St. Olaf College, and for the attempted 1876 James–Younger Gang robbery of the First National Bank.

Before statehood

Dakota history

Dakota communities had deep cultural connections with the region's rivers, woodlands and prairie.

1852–1853

Early settlement

Alexander Faribault's settlement and the organization of Rice County helped establish the area's civic development.

1860s

Industry and education

Schools, churches, mills and new public institutions became central to regional growth.

1866

Carleton College

Founded as Northfield College, the institution became an important part of the city's identity.

1874

St. Olaf College

St. Olaf's founding expanded Northfield's academic and Norwegian-American cultural heritage.

1876

The Northfield bank raid

The failed robbery by the James–Younger Gang became a nationally remembered event.

History deserves context. Rice County's story includes Indigenous peoples, territorial settlement, cultural change, industry and conflict. Visitors seeking detailed historical interpretation should consult local historical societies, museums and Dakota historical resources. Taxi Minnesota provides the transportation, not professional historical guiding.

Connecting Rice County with Minnesota

Airport pickups, college shuttles, bus handoffs and rural travel.

College travel and rural transportation require attention to the final portion of the trip, especially when a traveler reaches a bus stop without a confirmed ride to the next destination.

Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport

Travelers visiting Carleton College, St. Olaf College, South Central College, or Rice County businesses may request eligible airport transportation. Normal highway routes may involve I-35 and connecting state roads.

60–90 min Illustrative Faribault-area normal-conditions planning range

In snow or significant congestion, allow substantially more time. Winter journeys can exceed normal driving times, especially during major storms or road closures.

Times are rough planning estimates, not live traffic calculations. Pickup eligibility, flight scheduling, driver availability and reservation requirements apply.

Northfield Lines Metro Express

Northfield Lines operates scheduled Metro Express bus connections during the school year, including college and Northfield stops with service toward MSP Airport and Twin Cities destinations.

A traveler using the bus may still need transportation from the arrival point to a residence, hotel, rural address or other destination.

Amtrak and rail connections

Rice County does not have an active Amtrak passenger station on the currently published intercity passenger rail network.

Travelers seeking Amtrak service may need to connect to a station elsewhere in Minnesota, such as Saint Paul's Union Depot or another scheduled route location.

Taxi Minnesota can review eligible Rice County-origin trips to regional rail terminals. Saint Paul and Minneapolis city-limit pickups are not offered.

Uber, Lyft and rural return transportation

Rideshare service depends on the number of drivers available in a specific location and the demand for rides at that time.

Northfield and Faribault may have different availability from smaller communities such as Nerstrand, Morristown, Webster or rural county addresses.

An Uber or Lyft drop-off does not guarantee a driver will be waiting for your trip home. For important departures, do not get stranded. Plan ahead.

Transportation When You Need a Plan

Don't get stranded. Arrange the ride before your options run out.

From a student arriving for a new academic year to a traveler whose car won't restart, private transportation is often about the next part of the journey.

The college move-in day

You arrive at MSP Airport and need transportation to an approved Carleton or St. Olaf residence hall. Book ahead and provide your flight, luggage and campus location details.

The park-and-ride problem

Your vehicle is parked at a public lot, but the battery is dead. A jump-start attempt did not work. If you can wait somewhere safe and accessible, request passenger transportation to the next destination.

The rural rideshare drop-off

Uber or Lyft brought you to Morristown or Nerstrand, but no driver is available to take you back. Submit your exact pickup location and requested travel time to check prearranged service.

Wedding guest transportation

Guests are staying at a Northfield hotel while the ceremony is at a rural property. A properly scheduled ride can connect approved locations without relying on late-night availability.

Campus to another city

A student needs to travel from Northfield to Rochester, Mankato, St. Cloud, Red Wing, Owatonna or another eligible destination. Request long-distance passenger transportation through the reservation center.

Winter flight departure

Snow is forecast before a morning flight. Schedule early, leave additional road travel time and confirm your transportation arrangements before departure day.

Not an emergency service: Taxi Minnesota provides prearranged passenger transportation, not towing, vehicle repair, ambulance transportation or guaranteed immediate dispatch. All Minnesota trips require electronic payment before dispatch.
