Get oriented to the place around your stay

A vacation rental search is only one part of trip planning. Use these public resources to check the surrounding area, then research the particular home, street, attractions, restaurants, and weather conditions that matter to your group.

Crime information & public registry checks

Crime information and public registry tools belong together when visitors are researching an unfamiliar rental area. Use the official source for the state and community where the rental is located. These are research tools, not safety ratings of an address, host, neighborhood, or property.

Put the stay in context

What shaped these river towns

Standing in a historic home is more useful when visitors can understand why a house sits above the river, why a downtown has brick storefronts, or why a road follows the water.

Hudson: river crossings and lumber

Hudson began as Willow River in 1840. Its name changed in 1852, while lumber helped draw people and sawmills to the St. Croix Valley. The former Highway 12 toll-bridge causeway is now a pedestrian route by the water.

Hudson history ↗

Stillwater: territorial beginnings and lumber

Stillwater incorporated in 1854 and became an early Minnesota center for river commerce and lumber. Its downtown, South Hill, and cultural landscape connect buildings, ravines, mills, and river history.

Stillwater walking tours ↗

Prescott: where two rivers meet

Prescott grew around the meeting of the St. Croix and Mississippi Rivers. Steamboats, shipping, milling, lumber rafts, warehouses, and later railroads shaped its riverfront story.

Prescott history & heritage ↗

River Falls: the Kinnickinnic and mills

River Falls developed around the Kinnickinnic River, which powered early sawmills and flour mills. City history also recognizes Dakota and Ojibwe connections to the land before settlement.

River Falls history ↗

Taylors Falls: cliffs, river travel, logging

Taylors Falls sits beside the St. Croix River gorge and Interstate State Park. The river carried early immigrants and later lumber downstream; today it brings hikers, paddlers, and history visitors.

Taylors Falls guide ↗

Afton: historic village on the St. Croix

Afton was platted in 1855. Its old village developed along the river and remains the center for its historic setting, walking-tour landmarks, marinas, shops, and local restaurants.
